Welcome to the 2024 CPRIT Annual Report

Texas leads the country in its unprecedented commitment to preventing cancer and researching and developing new technologies to detect, treat, and cure cancer. Created by the Texas Legislature and approved by two statewide votes in 2007 and 2019, the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) is the second largest public funder of cancer research in the U.S., following only the National Cancer Institute. And our dedication to the fight against cancer is uniquely Texan.

This 2024 Annual Report highlights CPRIT’s mission and how we support those working every day to end the burden of cancer for all Texans.

Kristen DoyleChief Executive Officer

Fellow Texans,

I am proud to introduce the 2024 CPRIT Annual Report, a review of our fifteenth year as the state’s cancer-fighting agency.

Created by the Texas Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support and approved by the people of Texas through two statewide votes, CPRIT is a $6 billion investment in groundbreaking research into preventing, diagnosing, treating, and surviving cancer. As of August 31, 2024, CPRIT has awarded more than $3.65 billion to 144 entities and institutions across Texas through 2,017 merit-based, independently peer reviewed grants. CPRIT is now the second largest public funder of cancer research in the U.S., following only the National Cancer Institute.

The need to accelerate cancer cures and treatments and evidence-based cancer prevention efforts throughout the state is clear. Cancer is the leading cause of death for Texans under the age of 85 and the leading cause of disease-related death in children and adolescents in Texas. Over 143,000 Texans will receive a cancer diagnosis this year, and more than 48,000 will die.

As CPRIT continues its second decade, we remain true to our three-part mission to invest in the state’s research prowess, to create and expand life science infrastructure across Texas, and to expedite innovation in cancer research and prevention strategies. CPRIT funding saves lives and makes a lasting difference in the fight against this disease.

In this year’s report, we are shining a spotlight on our grantees’ work in cancer clinical trials, an essential component of CPRIT’s mission. Researchers conduct cancer clinical studies to test innovative approaches to help find safe and effective options to prevent, detect, treat, and cure cancer in Texas. Throughout the report, we provide examples of ongoing CPRIT-funded clinical research and what it can mean for those suffering from the burden of cancer in Texas. We also highlight evidence-based cancer prevention strategies - such as educational interventions, screenings, and cancer vaccinations - employed across the state that are improving Texans’ health now and saving lives.

While the physical and emotional weight of cancer is all too familiar to most Texans, many may not realize the enormous toll that cancer takes on the Texas economy. This Annual Report also examines the economic cost of cancer and details how CPRIT and its grantees provide a measurable return on the state’s investment in cancer research and prevention.

CPRIT is grateful for those who strive to reduce the burden of cancer across Texas. Their dedication and support continue to inspire us in our daily work. On behalf of the CPRIT Oversight Committee and the CPRIT staff, I appreciate the opportunity to keep the promise to Texans and make our state a worldwide leader in the fight against cancer.

Together with CPRIT, Texans will conquer cancer.

Sincerely,

Kristen Pauling Doyle
Chief Executive Officer
